The second running of the Women’s competition comprised of three teams, following late withdrawals during the week running up the event. Peterlee & Horden, Consett and Rockcliff Roses took part in a round robin competition in which Peterlee and Horden won the Cup by winning both their games (19-10 v the Roses, 37-0 v Consett) and the Roses won the Plate on a try count back after drawing 10-10 with third placed Consett. Peterlee and Horden’s Jess was nominated as Women’s Player of the Tournament.
The Roses also took the women’s Spirit of the Tournament prize after turning out and playing in charity shop dresses.
In the Men’s competition, two groups of three teams played a preliminary round, with the respective group winners heading to the Cup final, and the runners up going into the Plate final.
Group 1 consisted of Rockcliff Rangers, Newcastle Ravens and Hullensians, whilst in Group 2 the competitors were Rockcliff, Gosforth and a scratch BaBas side, predominately made up of Ravens players and players from both the Rockcliff sides.
Rangers went through to the Cup final after beating the Ravens 34-10 and Hullensians 27-24. Hullensians progressed to the Plate final after a narrow 29-24 win against the Ravens.
In Group 2 Rockcliff beat the BaBas 29-19 and Gosforth 22-5 to make it to the Cup Final, and Gosforth made it into the Plate final following a 22-0 victory over the BaBas.
The Plate final proved to the match of the Tournament, as Hullensians stormed back from being 15-0 down at half time to push their opponents all the way to the final whistle and the game ended with Gosforth taking the trophy by 15 points to 12.
Rockcliff and Rockcliff Rangers not decided to play each other for the Cup Final as they had effectively shared a small pool of players for the whole tournament, and jointly accepted the trophy on behalf of the Club. This is the first time that Rockcliff has ever won it’s own Super 10s Cup! The photo is courtesy of Chris Welch
Player of the Men’s Tournament was the Raven’s Bobby Wilson, and the clear winners of the Men’s Spirit of the Tournament were touring side Hullensians, who were lively all day, created a great atmosphere, and quite possibly broke the record for the numbers of jaegerbombs being consumed in a single day!
Roll on next year and Super 10s 20!
